summary of "The Tall Stranger"

Right from the beginning there were two dangerous men in order by Duke Hammond to tell Janet to get off her land, because he wanted it. She was alone and lonely because her husband was far away. She replied that she got the proper paper, but they weren’t interested in her words. She had 48 hours to leave her land, otherwise they’d burn her house down. Suddenly they heard a shot, a stranger had appeared. They tried to shoot him, but he hit one of them in his shoulder. Janet didn’t know the stranger who now was advising the men to go away. They left her land and she offered him a bath, clean clothes and a meal. They got into conversation and talked about Duke Hammond and his criminal entourage till late in the evening and agreed that he stayed for a few days to protect her. She stroke that he was very similar to his husband. While the stranger – called Jimmy - did several jobs and the gunmen didn’t come back. They decided to ride into Deadwood to go shopping. Arrived there – he found out quickly that Hammond’s men were often there and a new gunman, called Brodey, had arrived the day before. Right after there were seen by a Duke Hammond’s man who gave Brodey the order to kill Jim. Sheriff Hogan who made deals with Hammond was in the same way. Jim entered a saloon, a cowboy with a very loud mouth spoke to him. The piano stopped, everybody moved out of the way and all the town could hear the shots. Duke Hammond was smiling, because he thought his man had killed the troublemaker. But a few minutes later Jim Boone came to him and he froze. Jim put a bullet in a table and gave him the order to leave, Hammond was no longer the big king of the land. This evening Jim told Janet that he planed to go away in the freedom. There was a reward on the sheriff’s head – five thousand dollars, which he gave to her. In the next morning Jim had already gone.
