Dead Poets Society Summary

Dead Poets Society

Chapter 1 & 2
Our story begins in a private school in the remote mountains of Vermont. This is Welton Academy which was found in 1859 and exists this day, at the beginning of the new term for 100 years. A lot of proud parents brought their children to the initiation ceremony, which is led by the headmaster Gale Nolan. He tells the pupils about Welton Academy, about the numerous extracuricular activities and about the four pillars: Tradition, Honor, Dicipline and Excellence. During this initiation ceremony we get to know some of the most important characters: Todd Anderson, a 16-year-old boy, who has a difficult relationship to his parents, Knox Overstreet, aswell 16 years old, a boy with short hair an outgoing character and en athletic body, Charlie Dalton 16 years old, a handsome person same as, Neil Perry, also 16-year-old boy, who takes part in a lot of extra activities and whose parents expect a lot of him; and Mr. Keating the new English teacher of the school who was at Chester School in London before and was a former student at Welton Academy himself.

Chapter 3 & Chapter 4
The book “Dead Poets Society“, written by Nancy H. Kleinbaum, is about a mysterious and secret organization called: “Dead Poets Society“. Four young pupils, Neil Perry, Todd Anderson, Knox Overstreet and Charlie Dalton motivated by their teacher Mr. Keating, who was once part of the organization, are trying to find out more about the “Dead Poets Society“.
In chapters three and four, the four boys have their first day in the new schoolyear. Neil's father is of the opinion that Neil takes too many extracurricular activities and isn't concentrating on his results / marks. Neil protests against his father’s decision. His father gets very angry and tells him to come out of the room with him. Outdoors Neil's father tells him that he doesn't want to hear any contradictions from his son. When Neil comes back into the room his friends tell him to go his own way. After speaking with Todd about his parents, they find out, that their situation is very similar.
On the first day of school they have very boring and intense lessons. They have Chemistry, Latin, Mathematics and English. Except for their English lesson every lesson is boring. Their new English teacher Mr. Keating has very unconventional and extraordenary teaching methods (e.g. he jumps on his desk and shouts “Oh Captain! My Captain!“ from a poem by Wall Whitman about Abraham Lincoln).
In the first lesson he tells his students his motto: “Carpe Diem“, it means they should seize the day and find out where their place in the world is, because life is very short. Mr. Keating tells his students to look at the pictures of the former students and listen to what they are saying. After class they talk about Mr. Keating but don't know what to think of him.

Chapter 5
Chapter five of N. H. Kleinbaum’s novel “Dead Poets Society” describes three different scenes.
After a hard sport lesson Knox is invited to dine with the Danburrys’, old friends of his father. Mr Hager, a teacher, drives Knox to the Danburrys’ house.
The door is opened by the most beautiful girl Knox has ever seen. Unfortunately, Chris Noel is the Chet Danburry’s girlfriend. The family welcomes him, but Knox is not able to listen to them. He is always thinking about Chris.
Back at Welton Academy Knox’s friends encourage him to try to win her love. According to Keating a personal poetic definition of romance, love and beauty is the essence of life. He would like the students to act more like individuals and tells them to ‘destroy’ their books. Observing this spectacular process, Mr McAllister enters the classroom to check the students. Sine the class is supervised by a teacher, Mr McAllister leaves the situation as it is.

Chapter 6
Mr MacAlistor and Mr Keating talk about the last lesson. Mr Keating encourages the pupils to be free thinkers.
Neil finds Keating's senior annual in the library and shows it to his guys.
After that they ask Mr Keating what "Dead Poets Society" means. Mr Keating tells them about this secret organization from his youth. It is a group of boys who are reading poems of dead poets like Shelley, Thoreau or Whiteman with passion to the group members. Neil has the idea to revive this secret group. His guys and he think about to revive the cave meetings. After a short conversation the guys agree on this idea. Ecxept Todd, who only wants to listen to the others, he does not want to read out poems.

Chapter 7
At that night the boys find the cave and spend the whole time there by reading and dancing around the fire made of sticks of wood.
The next day in Mr Keating's class Mr Keating tries to show the boys how to have an own opinion on severel things. They have to have their own voice and do not have to agree with everything what for example an author says in his book.
Finally, he wants each pupil to write his own poem. Mr Keating notices that Todd abstains himself from the others and he makes remarks that Todd has to read in the "Dead Poets Society", too. He has to do something. After school Neil tries to speak with Todd about his behaviour, but Todd does not care what the others say. He just does not dare himself to read out aloud. Neil does not give up.

Chapter 8
There is another meeting in the cave in the afternoon. The boys talks about their dreams and wishes. Knox talks about his love to Chris. After talking the boys leave the cave and go to the soccer field, where they meet Mr. Keating for soccer training.
Mr. Keating gives the boys a slip of paper and instructs them to line up. Everybody has to read out the phrase on the paper and to kick the ball and they play until it’s dark.
At the same time at the reherasals Neil gets a roll in the theatre play as “Puck”. He is very happy but he has to have his father’s and Mr Nolan’s signature to be allowed to take part in the play.
In the following English lesson Knox reads out his poem. He thinks that it’s stupid but Mr. Keating likes it. After that Mr. Keating asks Todd for his poem, but he says that he doesn’t have a poem. Because of that Todd doesn’t think about his fear of showing feelings and he simply describes what he feels and composes a great poem out of his mind. Keating is very proud, the class mates applaud and the Todd’s self confidence grows. Later that day the boys meet in the cave again. Charlie makes music with the saxophone. He is a good musican. Knox calls Chris and gets an invitation to her party.

Chapter 9
The Chapter starts with Neil going to the rehearsal where he has much fun. He is very talented and plays well.
Later, Neil returns to Welton and sees Todd sitting outdoors shivering. Todd tells Neil that it is his birthday and his parents gave him the same desk set he got one year ago. He is very sad and thinks that his parents don’t love him. Neil tries to encourage Todd and they make fun together.
The second part of the Chapter taes place in the courtyard during Mr. Keating’s lesson.
Mr. Keating wants four boys to march around the courtyard and after a while they walk in step automatically. Mr. Keating and the students clap the rhythm of the marchers with their hands. Mr. McAllister who observes the commotion through his window asks himself what they are doing, then Mr. Keating stops the marching boys. With this experiment Mr. Keating wants to show how difficult it is to be / stay himself in a group. There’s always the danger to go with the mass and lose one’s own opinion.
Later at the night the boys, except Knox, meet in the cave. Charlie comes with two girls, called Gloria and Tina, to the cave. They drink whiskey together and Charlie makes fun with the girls by reading out poems for them. He also doesn’t want to be called Charlie any longer, his new name is “Nuwanda”. Charlie tells the others that he has written an article in the school newspaper titled: “Girls at Wellton?”
The article is signed by the Dead Poets Society. The boys are very angry with Charlie and also frightened.
In the last part Knox goes to Chris’ party, but Chris hasn’t got time for him. Because of that Knox is very frustrated and drinks too much.

Chapter 10
At the beginning of the chapter Knox sits on a sofa. It seems that he is on a party it also seems that he is a bit drunken. He tries to relax but on his right and left side are couples kissing and one is pinning him onto the couch. He figures out that the girl to his left is Chris, the girl he loves.
She kisses Ched but she leans on Knox and so he starts to touch Chris at first at her neck and after that at her breasts. After some time Ched finds out that Knox touches Chris and he attaks him but she saves Knox and the other guys hold Ched off so that Knox can escape. Back at the Dead Poets Society cave the others have a party. Gloria sits in Charlie’s arm who tries to make the others go away so that he could be alone with Gloria. After some time the others leave and he tries to kiss her but she stops him and asks him to recitate poems for her. She says that she loves Charlie because he’s so romantic. Charlie recitates a poem for her. Gloria thinks that listening to such poems is better than sex. Charlie is a little bit frustrated but he recitates some other poems.
On the next day Dean Nolan criticises an article in the “Welton Honors” which is about the need of girls at Welton. He says that anyone who knows anything about that article should say it now or he would be kicked out of the school. Charlie answers that God says they need girls at Welton. After that Nolan and Charlie go to Nolan’s office and Nolan punishes Charlie badly. Nolan wants Charlie to tell him everything about the “Dead Poets Society”. But Charlie doesn’t say anything about it. In the end Nolan says that Welton Academy can forgive him his mistakes. Back in his room Charlie doesn’t want to show his pain. His friends ask him what has happened but Charlie does not respond to that.
Later this day Nonaln wants to talk to Keating about his unorthodox teaching methods. Keating defends the way he teaches and says that he always thought that everyone should learn to think for himself. Nolan’s opinion is completely different. He wants Keating to teach the stundes in the tradiotional way. They should have discipline. After that Keating walks to the boys and tells Charlie that it is not the right way to be kicked off the school.
The next day in Mr.Keating’s lesson Keating wants to talk to the boys about college and how boring it is to analyse over hours and hours a single book. He also tells them a bit more about a special book the students should read and how to analyze a book they haven’t read. He wants them to practice on their own because that would be part of their final exam. Afterwards, he starts with a pop quiz to test the students. During the test he presents a picture of a beautiful girl leaning over to pick up a pencil so that the boys could see her panties. Keating continues to show beautiful women in provokating poses while the guys have to write the test. Knox cannot concentrate on the test he only writes Chris, Chris ,Chris on his paper.

Chapter 11
It is winter at Welton. Todd and Neil walk around outdoors and talk. When Neil comes back in his room, he meets his father. Mr. Perry has heard about the theatre play and is very angry. He forbids Neil to become an actor and wants him to quit the rehersals. Neil is afraid and doesn’t protest against his father’s advice. In the evening the students have dinner and the boys eat with their left hand instead of their right only to be different. They talk about Neil’s problem with his dad and how to slove it. They tell Niel to talk to Mr. Keating. Mr.Keating is of the opinion that Neil should try to talk to his father again to convince him. The other members of the DPS are in the cave. Knox, Neil’s friend, keeps writing a love poem for Chris. In the next morning Knox drives to Ridgeway High to meet Chris. But Chris doesn’t want to hear the poem and tells him to leave. He reads out his poem in Chris`s class and says that he loved her, but Chris is embarressed about it.

Chapter 12
Chapter 12 is about the theatre play "A midsummer night´s dream". After the practice Knox comes back to Welton Academy. He arrives at the very beginning of Mr.Keating’s lesson. When the bell rings, Mr.Keating asks Neil if he has talked to his dad about acting. He lies and says that he has the permission.
At night Mr.Keating and the students meet to go to the theatre play "A Midsummer Night´s Dream". Neil as "Puck" plays his role very well and passionately. During the play his father comes and sees him live on stage. After the play, everyone gives wishes to Neil, everyone beside his dad. After the play Neil’s father leads him to his car and treat him like a prisoner and takes him home.
Mr.Keating and the other boys walk back to Welton academy, they are sad about the development.

Chapter 15
Chapter 15 in the novel ”Dead Poets Society“ starts with the interogation of the “Dead Poets”. They are forced to sign a paper which will never allow Mr Keating to teach again. If they are not signing they have to take the consequences which means heavy punishment but Todd refuses to sign.
The next English class starts with Mr Nolan, who takes over Mr Keatind’s old course. During the lesson Mr Keating comes into class to take the rest of his bagage with him. When he wants to exit the room Todd stands up to excuse the others and to tell him that they were forced to sign the document. After this Nolan loses control over his new class and all the students are standing on their desks in last silent salute to their old English teacher.
