Facts

New York is the biggest city of the USA.

7,3 million inhabitants live in New York. In Manhattan live 1,5 mio inhabitants, in Queens 2 mio inhabitants, in Brooklyn live 2,5 mio inhabitants and in the Bronx live 2,5 mio inhabitants.

In New York live Whites, Blacks, Hispanics and Asians.

The Statue of Liberty

New York's classic landmark is the Statue of Liberty, which is a symbol of freedom in the whole world.

The Statue of Liberty was a present from the French to the Americans. Edouard de Laboulaye proposed to donate a big building to the Americans because of the Declaration of independence and to strengthen the friendship between the French and Americans. He worked more than 21 years on his idea to give freedom a monument. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi had the idea of welcoming the immigrants with a statue which should hold a torch as a symbol of freedom. It has a crown with seven Strahlen. These stand for the seven seas and continents, the 25 windows of the crown for the 25 jewels.

Gustave Eiffel invented the iron structure which should backup the outside of Lady Liberty. Miss Liberty, for which the face of Bartholdi's mother was used, stands on the broken catenate of slavery and holds the Declaration of Independence in her left hand with the historic date July 4,1776 on it.

May 21,1884 the statue was completed. It was divided in its separate parts, packed in 200 boxes, brought to New York by ship and on July 4,1884 Ferdinant de Lesseps handed the Statue of Liberty to the Americans.

The Americans built a platform, on which they assembled the Statue, on the Bedloe`s Island which is 5 hectares big. On August 3,1956 President Eisenhower renamed the island to Liberty island.

Beautification and Regeneration

After about 100 years rain, wind and storms left their marks on the statue. It was closer for visitors in 1984 to repair the Statue for the reopening on time which should be celebrated together with the Independence Day on July 4.1986. For two years Miss Liberty vanished under a rack while experts from France and the United States made it more beautiful and younger.

Technical information

The Statue weighs 225 tones. The copper coat weighs 100 tones. The height from the bottom to the top of the torch is 93 meters, the height of the platform is 46,5 meters. You have to climb up 167 steps from the island to the top of the platform, the another 168 steps to get to the crown of the statue and 54 more to get to the torch.

The base, which the inhabitants of New York had to pay themselves, cost 300.000 dollars and the statue, which was built and paid by the French, cost 250.000 dollars.

Because in the head of the statue only 41 and in the torch only 11 persons find a place to stand, it always overcrowded.

Central Park

The green lung of Manhattan is the Central Park. It is 4km long, 500 meters wide and it takes up 340 hectares. The Central Park goes from the 59th to the 100th street.

The Central Park was built by Frederik Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the years 1859- 1870. Their blueprint was winner in a free competition. To get this project done, marshes were dried up and many rocks were blasted. 10 mio carloads full of earth and humus had to come there and more than 500.000 trees and bushes were planted.

The Central Park is a composition of big landscapes and architectural elements, e.g. Lakes, hills, grasslands and rocks.

Trough 21 entrances you can get into the park which has a branching road network. At the weekend and to specific times on work days the Central Park is closed for cars.

In Central Park you can find many architectural and scenic sights. Step by step free time and sport constructions were built. There are also skate and ice skate courses depending on the season and also play grounds and constructions for sport and fun.

You shouldn't go to the Central Park at night. It isn't as peaceful at night as it is at daylight! You shouldn't visit the north and often deserted part alone even at daylight!

Empire State Building

To the main sights of New York surely belongs the view from the terrace of the Empire State Building. After the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 it is the highest building in New York.

The Empire State Building was constructed by the architects Arthur Loomis Harmoon, William Lamb and Richmond Shreve and built from 1929 to 1931. The company which built it was the American Bridge Company. The costs for the building were 41 mio Dollars.

Altogether 60.000 tons steel, 100 km of culverts and 5360km of telephone cable were used. 72 elevators get the employees to the 85 floors of the building.

Visitors usually go to the 86th or 102th floor. At the very top are outlook platforms which show an unforgettable view over Manhattan. The top outlook points is used for television and for radio programs.

Because of its height it seems to be an lightning arrester. It can be hit by lighting about 500 times a year. If there is a thunderstorm, the outlook platform is closed. Inside the building nothing can happen to people.

The Empire State Building was often used in Hollywood movies.

There were also bad sides like in 1945 when a b-25 bomber hit in the 79th floor and 14 persons were killed.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge is one oft the oldest and with its 530 meters one of the biggest rope bridge of the USA. It is over the East River and connects Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Brooklyn Bridge was planned by the German architect John August Roebling. But he died form an accident and his son Washington Auguste Roebling took over the leadership which he couldn't do for long eighter.

The construction of Brooklyn Bridge began in 1869. It cost 18 mio dollars. 600 laborers worked there and 27 lost their life.

To convince the population that it save the circus Barnum was sent over the bridge with 21 elephants. At the opening on May 24, 1883, 1.800 vehicles and 150.300 people went over the new bridge.

On June, 17, 1977 Brooklyn Bridge was included in the list of places and buildings which have to be protected, also known as the National Register of Historic Places. To show its architectural position better it is lighted at night since the 1980s.

The roadway has 6 lines, 3 for each direction. Until 1950 a train drove on the inner lines. Over the main roadway is a way for walkers and bikers.

Every day about 100.000 vehicles go over the Brooklyn Bridge.

As a emblem of the city New York Brooklyn Bridge is often used in novels, TV shows and movies.
